Miami Maritime litigation firm McAlpin Florez Marcotte adds two new associates

(MIAMI) November, 2018 – McAlpin Florez Marcotte PA, a boutique law firm specializing in Admiralty & Maritime Law, is pleased to announce that Joanne I. Nachio and George S. Florez have joined the firm as Associates.

Located in the Brickell area of Miami, McAlpin Florez Marcotte consistently ranks among the state’s premier maritime litigation practices. The firm’s attorneys are seasoned maritime litigators who regularly appear in both state and federal court at the trial and appellate levels, representing major insurers, their clients, and Fortune 500 corporations in all manner of marine claims and transactions.

“We are delighted to welcome Joanne and George to our growing team of attorneys,” said Managing Partner Richard McAlpin, who is AV rated and board certified by the Florida Bar in both civil trial and Admiralty & Maritime Law. “Their experience in our highly specialized field will help the firm continue to distinguish itself throughout the maritime community.”

A native of Panama, Joanne knows firsthand the importance of maritime law, as maritime transport and shipping changed the fate of her country. She credits her passion and interest in maritime law to her earliest legal experience, as an intern in the top shipping and admiralty litigation, ship finance and registration firm in Panama. She is a member of the Florida Bar.

She has also practiced law in the intercollegiate athletics, education, international sports, and the food and beverage industries.

Joanne pursued her education at Dartmouth College; a study abroad program at the University of Glasgow; the University of Notre Dame Law School; and St. John’s University School of Law. At Notre Dame, she served as the Executive Managing Editor of the Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law.

Joanne maintains deep relationships with her community serving as the District Enrollment Director for her alma mater, Dartmouth College; a member of the Executive Committee of the Dartmouth Club of South Florida; the Co-Chairperson of Public Affairs for the Junior League of Boca Raton; Financial Advisor for Alpha Phi International Fraternity; a member of the Notre Dame Alumni Association; Dame de La Chaîne, La Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs and Société Mondiale du Vin; and a Service Unit Volunteer of the Girl Scouts of the USA.

George concentrates his practice on maritime litigation defense. He has experience representing vessel owners, operators and charterers, cruise lines, concessionaires, cargo interests, marine insurance underwriters, protection & indemnity associations and marine lenders. He manages all aspects of his cases, including initial investigation, written discovery, taking and defending depositions, dispositive motion practice and trial preparation.

He is a contributing author of “Recent Developments in Admiralty and Maritime Law,” which was published earlier this year in Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Law Journal. He holds admissions to practice in the Florida Bar and the U.S. District Court for the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida.

George, who was born and raised in Miami, has first-hand experience with the sea. Prior to beginning his legal career, he was involved in Miami’s maritime community, assisting in the development of youth sailing programs for local clubs and non-profit organizations, including working as an Assistant Waterfront Director and Sailing Instructor at a Coconut Grove school.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a concentration in composition and rhetoric from the University of Florida. He earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Florida International University College of Law. While in law school, he was selected to compete in multiple mock trial competitions as a member of the FIU College of Law Trial Team.

George is a member of the Cuban American Bar Association, the Dade County Bar Association, and the University of Florida Alumni Association.

For more than three decades, firm attorneys have focused their practice on maritime litigation including defense of claims by maritime employees, passengers, longshoremen; Jones Act, seaman and property. The firm also handles hull and machinery claims; maritime liens; charter party disputes; marine subrogation; dive and tour boat accidents; first party marine insurance claims; environmental and pollution claims; and commercial litigation.
